SWIF-MIX

Engineered For True Mixing Action And Minimal Maintenance Expensemx250e

Like other sand handling equipment, sand mixing machinery is usually considered self-destructive. Swif-Mix solves this maintenance problem while delivering completely mixed sand. Those mixer components subject to excessive wear can be easily replaced during routine maintenance. Because of this innovative concept, downtime is reduced to a minimum and high output is maintained for a greater return on the dollars invested. All of this is packaged in a mixer that is simple in design, ruggedly built, economically priced, and that delivers high efficiency performance.

SWIF-MIX is Designed for More Efficient Mixing Action

To insure thorough mixing, sand plows aerate and continuously churn the entire batch, blending the catalyst and binder uniformly throughout the sand.

Reduced Weight Means Reduced Wear

In any machine, bearing wear and maintenance are directly related to the weight of its moving parts. Swif-Mix has engineered in durability by reducing weight. Multiple-lip sand seals located inside the vertical drive shaft housing also prevent sand from entering and damaging bearings.

mx250dCompare These SWIF-MIX Features with Other Mixers Adjustable Sand Plows

Abrasion resistant steel plows are standard on all models. In addition, plows are hard surfaced along the leading edge with a tungsten carbide layer applied by the oxyacetylene process. Both inner and outer sand plows are fully adjustable and designed to give maximum mixing action.

Removable Plow Assemblies
Simply pull one lock pin and the plow assembly can be lifted off the drive shaft. Any sand on the plow assembly can then be removed by tapping it on the floor or brushing with a whisk broom.

Simple to Use

  1. Load mixer with washed silicate core sand
  2. Power mixer for 10 seconds to level sand
  3. Scoop several depressions in sand and add catalyst
  4. Power mixer for 2 minutes to mix sand and catalyst
  5. Set timer for 2 more minutes and add binder through cover into dispersion funnel
  6. Discharge prepared no-bake core sand into container or at core station

dumpdoorDischarge Door Operates with One Hand
Opening the bottom discharge door is an easy one-hand operation. The plow action makes discharge automatic and makes the mixer practically self-cleaning. Discharge requires about ten seconds. During the mixing cycle, a flat rubber seal seal prevents leakage, and a simple cam lock “locks” the door. The door is adjustable to compensate for normal wear.

SWIF-MUL

ENGINEERED FOR TRUE MULLING ACTION AND MINIMAL MAINTENANCE EXPENSEml250a
Like other sand handling equipment, sand mulling machinery is usually considered self-destructive. Swif-Mul solves this maintenance problem while delivering completely mulled sand. Those muller components subject to excessive wear can be easily replaced during routine maintenance. Because of this innovative concept, downtime is reduced to a minimum, and high output is maintained for a greater return on the dollars invested. All of this is packaged in a muller that is simple in design, ruggedly built, economically priced, and that delivers high efficiency performance.

SWIF-MUL is Designed for More Efficient Mulling Action

Casting defects are generally caused by poor sand properties. These defects are greatly reduced when molding sands are mulled correctly. A true mulling action requires each grain of sand to be evenly coated with clay and binders.

Swif-Mul Mullers are engineered to supply the action and to supply it regularly. The Swif-Mul mulling action “squeezes” or “kneads” the mass of sand and clay between the mullers and the base. An adjustable spring keeps the correct amount of pressure on the mullers.

As the mullers revolve they cause a “smearing” action that rolls the grains of sand into the clay. To insure thorough mixing, sand plows aerate and continuously churn the entire batch, blending the oil or water uniformly throughout the sand. The result is a well-bonded “envelope” for each sand grain, and excellent adhesion between the coated grains.

SWIF-MUL Reduces Material Costs

Mulling ends the wasteful practice of discarding molding sands considered expendable or irreclaimable. With the addition of small amounts of new binders, catalyst, and oil to oil bonded sand, or the addition of small amounts of new binders and water to water bonded sand, a five or six minute re-mull cycle can renovate sand for further casting use.

In re-mulled sand, as in freshly mulled sand, the correct moisture content to prevent casting defects, and the correct oil content to minimize smoke and fume emissions can be achieved. These are moneysaving benefits – added to the impressive savings in materials which results from the simple practice of re-mulling molding sand.

Compare These SWIF-MUL Features with Other Mix Mullers

Reduced Weight Means Reduced Wear

In any machine, bearing wear and maintenance are directly related to the weight of its moving parts. Swif-Mul has engineered in durability by reducing weight. The light weight aluminum alloy cross head carriage assembly and the light weight muller wheels cause less strain and wear on bearings and gear train.

Adjustable Wheel PressureML250Plo

The wheel pressure can be changed by adjusting the flat tension spring to apply a precise amount of pressure for each specific mulling application. Clearance between the muller wheel and base plate can be adjusted to handle various grades of sand with utmost efficiency.

Protected Pivot and Bearings

The double ball bearings in each muller wheel are totally shielded and permanently lubricated. Seals protect both the axle shaft and the muller bearings to provide maximum bearing life. The pivot joints are enclosed by oil resistant, bellow-type dust covers, giving the wheel joints and moving parts complete protection from the abrasive action of the sand. Multiple-lip sand seals located inside the vertical drive shaft housing, prevent sand from entering the drive shaft and cross head castings.

Adjustable Sand Plows

Fully adjustable inner and outer sand plows are designed to give maximum mixing action. All plows are hard surfaced along the leading edge with a tungsten carbide layer applied by the oxy-acetylene process. Abrasion resistant steel plows are standard with all models.

Discharge Door Operates with One Hand
Opening the bottom discharge door is an easy one-hand operation. The plow action makes discharge automatic and makes the muller practically self-cleaning. Discharge requires about ten seconds. During the mulling cycle a seal ring prevents leakage, and a simple cam lock “locks” the door. The door is adjustable to compensate for normal wear.

t200

T-200-MT

The nose pour feature permits precise control of molten metal flow into a mold or pouring ladle. The nose pour configuration locates the crucible pouring lip coaxial with the trunnion bearings, so it is in a constant position during pouring. This provides greater safety and the shorter molten metal stream reduces the amount of hot metal exposed to cooling and oxidation.

The tilting mechanism is available in either hydraulic or manual hoist configuration, as shown in the illustration. The hydraulic tilt is designed with two double acting cylinders with hydraulic pump, valves and control systems. The manual hoist system employs an overhead chain with an electric or air hoist (furnished by customer) to tilt the furnace. Each design assures a smooth pouring action.

MODELS T-160, T-301 and T-80

T-80 pictured above

A most economical tilting furnace in sizes ideal for the small foundry, vocational or educational facility, and the precious metal melter or reclaimer. These center pivot models pivot at their center of gravity for easy tilting by a worm/worm gear drive. The manual tilt is operated with a hand wheel.  The worm gear tilting feature eliminates the possibility of accidentally dropping the furnace from the tilting position. Precision engineered gears, operating in an oil-tight gear box, provide years of smooth operation. The furnaces come equipped with a swing away refractory cover which can be locked in the closed position.

FLEXIBILITY, VERSATILITY, and ECONOMY

MIFCO manufactures some of the most versatile melting furnaces available. The wide temperature range will allow the melting of most non-ferrous metals used in casting and some grey iron up to class 25 or 30. All of these units have a temperature range of 1200° to 2400° F and are designed to melt as rapidly as possible. In the school shop or industrial foundry, these units have an immediate and profitable application. They cover nearly the entire range of modern melting needs. The initial investment for this type of industrial equipment is nominal and the maintenance is held to an absolute minimum due to the rugged construction and high quality of the furnace lining.

RUGGED, WELDED STEEL CONSTRUCTION

The outer shells of MIFCO furnaces are heavy gauge steel, reinforced where necessary, with rolled steel bars and welded throughout. The rugged construction conforms to the highest industrial standards. The lid support rings are also constructed of heavy gauge rolled steel bars. The furnace lids are recessed in sectional cast chrome-iron protection plates. The lid derrick is simple in design and sturdily constructed with a detachable handle to prevent overheating. Structural steel legs provide air circulation beneath the unit to prevent overheating of the foundry floor. The low operating height provides greater convenience for charging of the crucible. Each unit is provided with an overflow and drain hole in the base of the furnace.

SECTIONAL REFRACTORY LINING

Super-duty high alumina, hand-made, air rammed, pre-fired refractory shapes are used in the lining and dome shaped lids of all MIFCO High Speed Melters. The rapid melting schedules and capacity to melt grey iron make it mandatory that we use the best refractory material available to insure long life of the furnace lining. Super-duty high alumina can withstand the drastic temperature changes due to rapid heating and can operate at temperatures in excess of 3000° F without spalling or deterioration. Sectional linings facilitate movement during heating to prevent thermal cracking and deterioration of the lining and lid. Field replacement of the linings and lids is rapid and easy. Refractory relining kits are available for all MIFCO furnaces.

The crucible in the T80 furnace is held in place by 2 crucible support bricks.
The crucible in the T160 and the T301 furnace is held in place by a pour spout brick shown below.

HIGH TEMPERATURE INSULATION

High temperature castable insulation between the steel shell and the combustion chamber lining combine high strength and excellent insulating properties. This provides faster heating, lower heat loss and greater burner efficiency.

BURNER SYSTEM

The MIFCO gas-air mixer will utilize any type of fuel gas – natural, bottled or tank. The venturi design of the aspirator mixer develops a slight suction against the main gas line, eliminating the need for check valves. The standard mixer system is a manual two-valve control which permits the operator to set any type of flame or atmospheric characteristics desired. Both the gas and air valves are conveniently located. The type of fuel gas can be changed as desired without having to change an orifice or jet on the mixer. Each furnace is shipped complete with a blower. It is only necessary to make gas and electrical connections and the furnace is ready to operate.

COMBUSTION SAFEGUARD SYSTEM

Combustion safeguard system are standard equipment on all MIFCO furnaces. The burner control is an industrial type, electronic unit activated by a flame sensor that detects the ultra violet spectrum of the burner flame. Response to a flame failure of any kind is within 2 to 4 seconds and flame monitoring is continuous. The burner system is ignited by a timed electronic spark. In the event of a flame failure, reset of the burner control is manual.

All MIFCO gas fired tilt furnaces manufactured  in the year 2015 and later meet the minimum NFPA 86 guidelines (applies to burner systems over 150,000 BTU/HR):

  • Two valves required on pilot and main burners
  • Visual indication of valve position required for burners above 150,000 BTU/HR
  • High and low gas pressure switches required
  • Burners above 400,000 BTU/HR require visual indication and proof of closure

We recommend that the customer install a pressure gauge and regulator on their incoming line.  We DO NOT provide these.

C-Series Specifications

The primary differences between the Soft Metal Melters and the High Speed Melters are the cover design, melting speeds and temperature range. The Models C-10 and C-20 will melt aluminum and brass at moderate speeds and do not attain the high temperatures necessary for melting grey iron.

The differences in cover design is obvious in the illustrations. When using the furnace as a pot melter, a cast chrome iron melting pot is supported in the furnace chamber by the ring section of the cover. When aluminum is ready to pour, a detachable pouring handle locks in the lifting eyes of the melting pot and then is poured into the molds. The metal being melted is always visible and the ease of handling the melt makes this model extremely popular in Junior and Senior High Schools.

For melting brass at higher temperatures, the cover lid is dropped to close the pot ring opening. The cover is raised and pivots to the rear of the furnace so a crucible can be charged into the furnace chamber for the melting cycle. Slower melting speeds and lower temperatures allow the use of Super Duty High Alumina Refractory. Crucible tongs and shanks are required for withdrawing and pouring the crucible of metal.

COMBINATION CRUCIBLE AND POT FURNACE for melting aluminum or lead in a steel or cast iron pot suspended in the ring section of the furnace cover, or for melting aluminum and brass in a crucible inside the furnace chamber. Temperature range 1200° F to 2400° F.

MELTING TIME for melting a cast iron pot of aluminum approximately 24 minutes. Melting time for crucible in closed furnace chamber for aluminum approximately 18 minutes, for brass approximately 35 minutes.

Furnaces are supplied with a No. 4 Ultra Violet System with spark ignition.

SECTIONAL HARD BURNED LINING and two piece cover are High Alumina Super Duty refractory, capable of withstanding temperatures in excess of 3000° F. The refractory sections are kiln fired to develop excellent resistance to scuffing and spalling. The sectional design prevents cracking due to thermal expansion. All shapes are cemented in place with high temperature mortar. The combination of pre-burned sections and high quality alumina refractory provides exceptionally long lining life. The combustion chamber lining is backed by a wall of high temperature refractory insulation which reduces heat loss through the furnace walls, gives more comfortable operation and greater efficiency. Relining kits are available for field installation.

STEEL WELDED CONSTRUCTION of heavy gauge furnace shell and reinforcing members conform to industrial specifications. Hot rolled bar is used for support rings and lid bands. The two piece furnace cover is recessed in a cast chrome iron top protection plate. The lid derrick is front operating, with removable handle. Lid swings to rear of furnace when open. A drain hole is located in the bottom of the furnace for drainage of overflow of metal. The exhaust port is at the rear of the furnace.

B-Series General Specifications

FLEXIBILITY, VERSATILITY and ECONOMY:

MIFCO manufactures some of the most versatile melting furnaces available. The wide temperature range will allow the melting of most non-ferrous metals used in casting and some grey iron up to class 30 or 35.

RUGGED, WELDED STEEL CONSTRUCTION:

SECTIONAL REFRACTORY LINING:

Super-duty, high alumina, hand-made, air rammed and pre-fired refractory shapes are used in the lining and dome shaped lids of all MIFCO High Speed Melters.

HIGH TEMPERATURE INSULATION:

High temperature castable insulation between the steel shell and the combustion chamber lining combine high strength and excellent insulating properties. This provides faster heating, lower heat loss and greater burner efficiency.

BURNER SYSTEM:

COMBUSTION SAFEGUARD SYSTEM:

Combustion safeguard systems are standard equipment on all MIFCO furnaces. The burner control is an industrial type, electronic unit activated by a flame sensor that detects the ultra-violet spectrum of the burner flame. Response to a flame failure of any kind is within 2 to 4 seconds and flame monitoring is continuous. The burner system is ignited by a timed electronic spark. In the event of a flame failure, reset of the burner control is manual.
